POLITICAL BOOK CLUB
PBC – The book for March 27th is Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum (June 2021, 224 pages) The Pulitzer Prize winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism. Applebaum contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.
The only requirement to join the book club discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material. If you would like to join the book club, or want to submit the title of books you are interested in reading and discussing, or if you would like any other information about the book club, please contact jananderson46@gmail.com
LET”S TALK POLITICS
At 4:15 pm, those who have not read the book can join the group to share thoughts, concerns, insights, and predilections about current political and societal events. As one member stated, we can talk about “those issues which keep you awake at night”. Everyone has a chance to speak, while we all listen. Topics for discussion usually evolve from the group concerns. Whatever your political persuasion, you are welcome to join this accepting and respectful group.
To join the Zoom meeting, click here and use passcode 220148. You will need to be admitted by the host.

Letter from the Chair
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Presidential Election Day 2024 is in 39 weeks. What will you do to make sure that it’s a day to celebrate? There’s a lot to do between now and then!
Be sure to attend our Democracy Fair on February 24th, from noon to 4:00 pm.
Invite everyone you know and help us fill the cafeteria and commons areas of Coconino High School with voters and future voters. We’ll need lots of help that day, please sign up to help if you can.
A big thank you to Nancy Branham and all the volunteers who make the Coconino
County Democratic Party Donation Drive in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. such a huge success. The last of the winter clothing and blanket donations are packed up and ready for delivery to Sovereign Lands. Thank you to District 4 Supervisor Judy Begay for making those arrangements.
Are you interested in working for Coconino County to help with Election Day?
Find out more at our Action Meeting or call the Elections Office at 928-679-7120 and ask for Denise Anderson.
Finally, go ahead and download the DNC REACH app on your personal device, and
look on Mobilize for the training on how to use it. This APP for relational canvassing will be a key component of the coordinated campaign, and you’ll be hearing lots more about it.
Get ahead of the game and be ready for the campaign to reelect Biden/Harris!
Together we will celebrate a Blue Arizona 2024,
Laura Carter

About this event
Every week during the AZ Legislative session we provide thoughtful and perceptive insights on issues, legislation, and state & local politics.
What can we do to fight back against MAGA? REQUEST TO SPEAK – RTS
Request to Speak was designed by the State of AZ to help lobbyists communicate with legislators. Citizens are encouraged to use it as it’s a great way to let lawmakers know if we support a bill.
Sign up through CEBV!!! Join the Happy Hour.
Please RSVP here for the Zoom link: https://bit.ly/CEBVHH2025
Please contact Susan Shapiro if you want to attend!
About this event
Our special guest speaker is Harrison Redmond from the ACLU of AZ. He will tell us what the ACLU is working on, what our rights are, and how we can help.
Join Indivisible Northern AZ’s monthly Community Gathering to learn about what we can do to push back against policies that are harmful to our local community, our state and our nation.
We will discuss what tactics have been working and how we can stay in the fight.
The onslaught of news, the chaos out of the White House, it’s all meant to overwhelm us. It’s a deliberate strategy to sow confusion and make us believe we are powerless to fight back.
The antidote: Coming together in community to process what’s happening, to sift through what’s important and what’s just noise, and coalesce around strategies for fighting back.
Join Indivisible co-founders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg each week as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.
To attend, please email Shelley Haiken
or call Toby at 928-274-0389 for LOCATION INFORMATION
Antonia Scatton will talk about how the way we communicate shapes public opinion. Rather than telling people what we think they want to hear, we have to listen to them and make the case for what we know to be morally right. This is the best way to both win political campaigns and forge a better, kinder and more mutually responsible society. To do this effectively, we need to understand critical facts about how language impacts the brain and how our public debate actually works. Learn how to push the right buttons, with hope instead of hate.
Antonia is a leading authority on message strategy and framing with more than 25 years of experience in political communications. She is the author of the Substack newsletter Reframing America and a protégé of renowned cognitive linguist, George Lakoff. Antonia currently works with the DNC’s Association of State Democratic Committees to bring her messaging workshops to party leaders, candidates and activists across the country. She wants to help revitalize the Democratic Party and make human decency popular again!

Yavapai Dems Sponsor a Veterans Town Hall
Join a platform for veterans and VA employees to voice their concerns.
We’re giving veterans and VA employees a much needed platform to voice their concerns about the impact of DOGE cuts. The public is welcome at this free event, so please join us in standing up for our Veterans!
Yavapai County is home to nearly 25,000 veterans. The Bob Stump Department of Veterans Affairs is one of the largest locations serving veterans in Northern Arizona, with over 1,000 employees. Many veterans, their families and caregivers, VA employees, veterans organizations and community members are alarmed by the Trump administration’s recent threats to terminate essential employees and reduce funding for necessary care and benefits. It is critical that we hear directly from those affected and support our veterans of Yavapai County.
Share your views with others who also have things to get off their chest, and recommend possible actions.

Greetings film afficionados, let’s keep our face to face gatherings going with a conversation about:
The film No Other Land was made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective, named Best Documentary Film at the Academy Awards and was the year’s most decorated documentary. The film makers documented the demolition of homes in Masafer Yatta in the West Bank from 2019-2023, creating a “visual record of what was happening” that Alissa Wilkinson, in her The New York Times review, called “audacious and devastating.” We’re hoping you were able to catch the film when it played at the Mary D. Fisher in late March since as you know, the film has had a difficult time finding a US distributor (which introduces much asked questions about documentary films and market distribution).
