About Paula Cullison
Keynote Speaker
Paula (Giangreco) Cullison is a long time women’s rights, peace and social justice advocate.
As President of Women in Management (for then Mountain Bell / US West), she created a major project titled – The Year for All Arizona Women which featured over 100 events throughout the state and gained the support of Governor Bruce Babbitt, over 60 Mayors, Tribal Leaders, County and other officials.
Appointed by then Mayor Terry Goddard, she served on the Phoenix Women’s Commission for three years.
Paula presented at the United Nations Conference on Women in Kenya – How to Create A Year for ALL Women in your country or City. Prior to attending the UN Environmental Conference in Brazil, she created an event in Phoenix on Eco-Feminism: Polotics of the Environment which featured Bella Abzug, the late US Congresswoman from NY.
In the 1990s concerned about the lack of recognition of Women’s Rights Day (Aug 26th), she petitioned American Greetings to issue a free e-card which continues to be available. Gloria Feldt notes Paula’s tenacity in her book, No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think About Power.
In 2002 she created The Arizona Women’s Partnership, an all volunteer philanthropic non-profit, to award grants to grass roots charities that assist under-served women and children at risk here in AZ. Over $380,000 has been awarded to date.
Three years ago, Paula created the 95th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment event which featured Mary Schroeder, Justice of the Ninth Appellate Court.
Paula, a long time ERA advocate, spoke at the recent rally at the Senate Capitol.
She has been at both Women’s Marches and a huge number of demonstrations.
She has traveled extensively and has been exhibiting her international photography, primarily at local college and university campus libraries. Paula hopes that these exhibits will encourage students and faculty to think globally.
Daughter of Italian immigrants and native New Yorker, Paula has lived in Phoenix since 1974. She is a graduate of City University of NY – Baruch College. Her AIESEC traineeship to Switzerland was sponsored by Columbia University.
Paula is the recipient of the Children and Family Resources Lifetime Achievement Award, Susan B Anthony Award, Macy*s Heart and Soul Award, National Bank of Arizona Amazing Woman Award.

The First Cottonwood Earth Day March and Rally will take place on Sunday, April 22, starting at 10 am. The March will start at Riverfront Park and end at a Rally at the Verde Valley Montessori School on N. Main St. The march and rally are sponsored by the Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance. This event is open to the public and people are encouraged to bring signs on preserving and protecting Planet Earth.
Earth Day Network, the organization that leads Earth Day worldwide, announced that Earth Day 2018 will focus on mobilizing the world to End Plastic Pollution, including creating support for global regulation of the disposal of plastics.
Speakers at the rally include Jim Gale, a former Forest Ranger, and Frances Julia Riemer, a member of Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance, providing information on how local towns and cities can adopt strong climate action plans.

As you’ve likely seen in the news today, Arizona teachers are uniting with others around the country to demand better education funding by the state legislature. Truly, it is not acceptable that Arizona’s education funding per student is the lowest in the nation. It was not always this way. Twenty years ago, Arizona provided median support for its children.
Teachers in Sedona and all of Arizona have been heroic, for decades now, in their everyday battle to maintain excellent instruction and high achievement despite the extreme, long-term collapse of financial support.
No teacher, no school or district, wants to disrupt a child’s day of learning or inconvenience parents. However, in efforts to make legislators listen and act, there is the potential for visible teacher “walk-ins” next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and a “walk-out” on Thursday, April 26th.
Walk-ins are not intended to have any negative impact on instruction. In the event of a work stoppage, student safety will be the priority in District decision-making. Should it become necessary to close school next Thursday, parents and guardians will be notified as early as possible.

–Attention All Yavapai Voters–
Yavapai County Jail Tax
DORR supports a “YES” Vote
An important vote is right around the corner. If you are a Yavapai resident, you may have already received (or will soon receive) a pamphlet describing the upcoming special election ballot. The purpose of this election concerns the renewal of an existing ¼ cent sales tax to continue the funding for the Yavapai County Jail. The Democrats of the Red Rocks urge you to vote yes and mail back your ballot as soon as you receive it.
This ¼ cent tax is not a new tax and it is not an increased tax.
It is a renewal of an already existing sales tax, at the same rate for another 20 years.
The jail receives almost half of its funding through this sales tax.
By continuing the ¼ cent sales tax, the cost of the jail is spread out fairly. If the sales tax continuation does not pass, the costs for the jail will be passed on to various municipalities that use the jail, and their citizens will bear the burden. It could even result in increased county property taxes. As it is currently set up, everybody pays a small ¼ cent per dollar of sales tax no matter where they live. This helps share the costs among residents and visitors alike in Yavapai County.
Please vote yes on renewing the ¼ cent jail tax. You will receive your ballot in the next few weeks. The ballots contain instructions for mailing them back and are due no later than May 15th.

To grow the grass roots to slow climate change, we must reach out. Why and how do we do this? We will go through techniques and approaches to accomplish this, all under the urgency of slowing climate change. No other force can slow the climate change than ordinary folks coming together. this is a great training to gear you up for summer outreach to slow climate change!
The first training will be held in Sedona this Saturday April 28 3 to 5. If you cannot make this training, another training will be held on May 12 in Flagstaff at the East Library from 2 to 4 PM. pm. The League of Women Voters of Arizona invites all members of the League of Women Voters in Arizona to attend our statewide bi-annual meeting in Tucson Arizona. Our host League is the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson. Freda Johnson, President and Judy Wood, President-elect along with a great team of League members have put together a special event.
The historic location at the Lodge on the Desert is an opportunity for League members from around the state to get to know each other, and to begin our work on the Arizona portion of the League of Women Voters’ Roadmap toward a stronger League. We will also do a small amount of business, and learn about using some of the newer technologies for League work.
Who can attend: We want any League member in Arizona to attend! We encourage any League member who is interested in how the League of Women Voters in Arizona will move from where we are today to where we want to be in the future.

Tens of thousands of teachers are walking out of their schools in Arizona on Thursday. Arizona is the latest conservative state with protesters demanding an increase in teacher salaries and more resources for students. In this video op-ed, four conservative teachers lament the conditions in their classrooms and, in turn, wrestle with their political beliefs.
“I’m a die-hard Republican, and I’m dying inside,” says Allison Ryal-Bagley, an elementary school substitute teacher. “Republicans aren’t taking care of our kids.”
Over the last decade, Arizona has had the greatest decrease in per-student spending in the country — a 36.6 percent drop since 2008 — making it 48th in the nation. Arizona also ranks 43rd in teacher pay, at nearly $11,000 less than the national average, according to the National Education Association.
William Kimsey, who teaches English, is fed up and is moving for a teaching job in Indonesia. Laura Fox, a music teacher, works the late shift at McDonald’s to make ends meet. Jenny Bentley Ryan used to work as a Lyft driver to supplement her income teaching science. They are challenging Arizona’s Republican governor, Doug Ducey, to increase taxes and give public education the funding it deserves. — The Editors

The Big Park Fun Run returns to Big Park on Wednesday, May 9th. Students, staff, families and general community members will walk or run for 30 minutes on our school course. Students will seek donations for their efforts during the three weeks prior to the Fun Run; Big Park Community School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is currently seeking event sponsorships. Your sponsorship dollars will help cover the cost of the Fun Run and increase our earning potential for this event. Together, we are raising funds for Big Park classrooms. We anticipate more than 200 students taking part in this year’s Fun Run. Dr. David Brill, M.D. – candidate for U.S. Representative for Congressional District 4 is the first Democratic candidate to file with the Arizona Secretary of State for CD4, filing 2,000 signatures from throughout CD4 seeking the Democratic nomination for the August 28, 2018 Primary Election. Justin Clifton – Sedona City Manager, is the city’s chief administrative officer and is responsible for overseeing the daily administration of the city. He has held the position for three years and was formerly the City Manager of Delta, Colorado. The mayor and city council appoint the city manager, who reports directly to those elected officials. Mr. Clifton will speak on a variety of current issues in the City of Sedona, including the upcoming city election.
