Greetings film fans, We’d like to keep with awards season, but shift this time to Minari (Amazon), just awarded the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and drawn from his own experiences as a child, Minari is the story of a Korean family who moves to Arkansas, via California, in search of the American dream. New York Times film reviewer A.O. Scott wrote that “Chung’s touch is careful and precise. Everything is weighed. Nothing is wasted.”
If you want a pairing, Ellen Kamerling suggests House of Sand and Fog (Amazon), based on the 1999 novel by Andre Dubus III. The film is the story of a conflict between an Iranian immigrant family and an American woman over a Californian coastal house. Also a character study, Roger Ebert wrote “Like great fiction, House of Sand and Fog sees into the hearts of its characters, and loves and pities them.”
Let’s meet Friday, March 19 at 5:00 on zoom. We look forward to a rich conversation about immigration, equity, economics, dreams, and wherever else the films lead us.

Dr. Sharon Megdal, Director of the Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona, will speak on complex water issues in our region and efforts to address them on Monday, March 22, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM via ZOOM. She notes, “These problems are too big for easily identifiable and/or ‘standard’ solutions and may reflect underlying societal or political issues. There are often differing viewpoints as to the causes and/or potential pathways to mitigating the challenges.” Co-sponsors for this event include OLLI at Yavapai College, Friends of the Verde River, Keep Sedona Beautiful, and Northern AZ Climate Change Alliance.
Dr. Megdal received her advanced degrees in Economics from Princeton University. Her work at the University of Arizona focuses on water management, policy, and governance in water-scarce areas of the world, in the Middle East as well as Arizona. She currently serves as Board President of the International Arid Lands Consortium, as well as Board Member of the American Water Resources Association.

The Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) is meeting March 23rd at 9:00 am. The meetings are open to the public. The link to the meeting is https://youtu.be/ZyUt8nuRFi4.
The Commission just selected an Executive Director, and is in the process of hiring staff and becoming fully operational. They have a new website at https://irc.az.gov/, but it is not fully built out yet.
The link to view the agenda is https://irc.az.gov/sites/default/files/meeting-agendas/3.23.21%20IRC%20Agenda.pdf. One of the agenda items is to discuss options for securing legal counsel. They can continue with representation from the Attorney General’s Office or “hire legal counsel, that is already procured, from the Attorney General’s Outside Counsel List” or continue with the RFP/procurement process. The second and third options have not been clearly explained to the public. Also yet to be decided is whether the Commission hires one law firm, or one law firm to protect Democratic interests and another law firm to protect Republican interests.

Arizona’s Independent Redistricting Commission is re-formed every ten years to produce Congressional and Legislative districts. Prop 106, passed in 2000, gives them the authority to produce new maps “independent” of the State Legislature. They are mandated to start with a clean slate and produce maps that:
- Comply with US Constitution
- Comply with the Voting Rights Act
- Are of equal population
- Are geographically compact and contiguous
- Respect communities of interest
- Use geographic features, city, town and county boundaries, and undivided census tracts
- Are competitive
This year’s Commission is made up of two Democrats, two Republicans and one Independent. Commission members are:

Currently, meetings are held via Zoom from 1:00 until 3:00 pm (MST). The only requirement to join the discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material.

– Meet once a month either in person or virtually – Educate and inform local Democrats on issues of Yavapai County and Yavapai County Democratic Party.
– Recruit and help train Precinct Committee Persons – To find individuals willing to be elected Precinct Committee Persons to represent the precincts of the Verde Valley Yavapai Democrats.
– Introduce and Promote Democratic Party Candidates – Invite candidates to speak at the monthly meetings and canvass to promote candidates.
Support Local, County, State and National Democratic organizations – Partner with these organizations to promote issues involved.
– Promote awareness of the VVYD – Publish a monthly newsletter; partner with other organizations to register, educate and promote voting; hold special events to promote Democrats.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Meeting
“Latinx Resilience: At the Border, in the Legislature & Getting out the Vote”

The second LWVNA DEI Committee meeting will commence with Ms. Alejandra “Alex” Gomez, the Co-Executive Director for Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA), speaking about the history of Arizona’s Latinx community through the present, plus some of LUCHA’s current legislative concerns and past legislative successes. Following Ms. Gomez’ presentation, Ms. Amanda Aguirre, President and CEO of the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. (RCBH), will speak about her journey to the Arizona State Legislature, and critical current state and national legislation impacting the Latinx population within Arizona and the U.S.
Alejandra “Alex” Gomez has dedicated her life to social justice and building community through power grassroots organizing. At LUCHA, Alex helped lead the effort to raise Arizona’s minimum wage and turn Arizona blue in 2020. Rooted in her family’s immigration struggle, she led the DACA organizing efforts and expanded DACA at United We Dream National Network as the National Deputy Organizing Director. She also was a Regional Field Director for Organizing for America.
Amanda Aguirre has been involved in health care and business administration for more than 35 years and has served in her current capacity at RCBH since 1991. In 2003, Ms. Aguirre became the first female and first Hispanic to represent Arizona House District 24 (now Legislative District 4) before serving in the Arizona State Senate from 2006 to 2010. During her Arizona legislative terms, former Senator Aguirre passed significant bi-partisan legislation. In 2006, HB 2526 created a special “Breast Cancer Awareness” license plate, the proceeds of which benefit cancer screening for uninsured women. In 2008 SB 1263 was passed, “Steven’s Law,” requiring that private medical insurers provide Autism Spectrum Disorder service coverage under their insurance plans. This program is free. The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present a special Earth Day premiere of the inspiring new film “Seeding Change” on Thursday, April 22 at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. There will be a bonus recorded on-screen conversation following both screenings featuring the filmmakers and special guests. Over the past two decades, a new breed of mission-driven business has risen, led by the next generation of social entrepreneurs. Their diverse companies follow a philosophy known as the Triple Bottom Line, one that measures success socially, environmentally, and economically. At the core of these enterprises, a new vision exists to create solutions through their supply chains, branding, and products. Whether they are fighting poverty through Fair Trade job creation, protecting biodiversity and rainforests, or regenerating topsoil through organic and sustainable agriculture, these businesses offer an opportunity for viewers to cast a vote through their purchase decisions for the type of future they support. Never have the stakes been higher, whether it is climate change, soil degradation, or plastic pollution. Triple bottom line companies provide an immediate opportunity for empowered consumers to be a part of the solution, vote with their dollars, practice conscious commerce and make positive changes for the planet and people.  “Seeding Change” presents ten such companies and their founders who engage their visions, investments, and business acumen to treat workers fairly, build sustainable delivery systems, provide quality consumer goods while helping save the world one purchase at a time.Directed by Emmy-Awarded Richard Yelland, “Seeding Change” is 51 beautiful minutes of informative, entertaining, and engaging social activism. Interviews with key players follow the entire fair market, sustainable product chain and take us around the world. From the United States to the Brazilian rainforest, to Asia, Africa, and Europe, the film charts the interdependent steps of imagining, sourcing, delivering, consuming, and disposing of great products you can buy right now. Throughout, we learn about the socially responsible future-forward mindset and hard-learned best practices by ten visionary companies that go into creating their diverse sustainable brands.
We see how farming communities can feed, lift-up, and educate their communities and how first-world consumers can get great products, vote with their dollars, and choose to contribute to keeping the planet healthy. We learn, too how all this effort also makes good business sense. “Seeding Change” is an educational tool, a roadmap to creating and running a Triple Bottom Line business, one dedicated equally to profit, social responsibility, and planetary sustainability. Following the film, there will be a 30-minute pre-recorded conversation with the filmmakers from the DC Environmental Film Festival. Currently, meetings are held via Zoom from 1:00 until 3:00 pm (MST). The only requirement to join the discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material.
