Reminder: This Thursday! SEEDING CHANGE Special EARTH DAY Premiere Screenings! Featuring on-screen Q&A with Filmmakers! ONE DAY ONLY! TWO SHOWS! |
Tickets are now available! The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present a special Earth Day premiere of the inspiring new film “Seeding Change” on Thursday, April 22 at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. There will be a bonus recorded on-screen conversation following both screenings featuring the filmmakers and special guests. Over the past two decades, a new breed of mission-driven business has risen, led by the next generation of social entrepreneurs. Their diverse companies follow a philosophy known as the Triple Bottom Line, one that measures success socially, environmentally, and economically. At the core of these enterprises, a new vision exists to create solutions through their supply chains, branding, and products. Whether they are fighting poverty through Fair Trade job creation, protecting biodiversity and rainforests, or regenerating topsoil through organic and sustainable agriculture, these businesses offer an opportunity for viewers to cast a vote through their purchase decisions for the type of future they support. Never have the stakes been higher, whether it is climate change, soil degradation, or plastic pollution. Triple bottom line companies provide an immediate opportunity for empowered consumers to be a part of the solution, vote with their dollars, practice conscious commerce and make positive changes for the planet and people. “Seeding Change” presents ten such companies and their founders who engage their visions, investments, and business acumen to treat workers fairly, build sustainable delivery systems, provide quality consumer goods while helping save the world one purchase at a time.Directed by Emmy-Awarded Richard Yelland, “Seeding Change” is 51 beautiful minutes of informative, entertaining, and engaging social activism. Interviews with key players follow the entire fair market, sustainable product chain and take us around the world. From the United States to the Brazilian rainforest, to Asia, Africa, and Europe, the film charts the interdependent steps of imagining, sourcing, delivering, consuming, and disposing of great products you can buy right now. Throughout, we learn about the socially responsible future-forward mindset and hard-learned best practices by ten visionary companies that go into creating their diverse sustainable brands.
We see how farming communities can feed, lift-up, and educate their communities and how first-world consumers can get great products, vote with their dollars, and choose to contribute to keeping the planet healthy. We learn, too how all this effort also makes good business sense. “Seeding Change” is an educational tool, a roadmap to creating and running a Triple Bottom Line business, one dedicated equally to profit, social responsibility, and planetary sustainability. Following the film, there will be a 30-minute pre-recorded conversation with the filmmakers from the DC Environmental Film Festival. The filmmakers: Director, Richard Yelland and Jeremy Black, Producer & Sambazon Co-Founder are joined by Lara Dickinson; Executive Director and Co-Founder of One Step Closer, OSC2, and Reem Hassani, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer of Numi Tea. Mara Webster leads a deep dive discussion on the making of “Seeding Change”, the global environmental impact, the need for sustainability within companies, and how forward-thinking entrepreneurs are meeting those challenges. CLICK HERE to see a trailer of “SEEDING CHANGE” and to order tickets online. Film runtime is 51 minutes (plus discussion). Showtimes: CLICK HERE to order online now. PEOPLE FIRST ECONOMY
It’s time to put the People First, in our economy, in our laws, and in the way we do business. Lawmakers have not listened to the demands of the community for generations, and even this year are trying to give away money we need for our schools, job training, and affordable housing. Join us for a community conversation to discuss how the proposed tax cuts will hurt our communities and what YOU can do to stop them and help your community thrive.

Contact [email protected] for more information and ZOOM invite.
This Month’s film:
Greetings political film fans, as promised, we’re watching a political comedy this time around. Join us for a discussion of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Available on Amazon)
In keeping with Academy Award nominees, Maria Bakalova has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Borat’s erratic but sweet daughter, Tutar. The film has also received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Matt Zoller Seitz called the film a “deliciously unstable comedy” in his RogerEbert.com review READ REVIEW While reviews are mixed, Nicholas Barber, writing for BBC, asserts, “But be patient: the last half hour of Subsequent Moviefilm has enough fine material to make it all worthwhile” READ REVIEW
Invite any Borat fans you know (e.g. your children, grandchildren). We’re thinking Borat will make for a great multi generational discussion.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Meeting
“Northern Arizona Tribal Communities:
Contemporary Concerns About Ancestral People & Places ”
Thursday, June 3, 2021, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. via ZOOM
During this third LWVNA DEI Committee meeting, Arizona Senator Jamescita Peshlakai, who is Diné from Cameron, Arizona and descended from a long line of tribal headmen and officials, will share how her interest in elected leadership developed and carried her to the State Legislature. Ms. Kimberly Spurr will speak about Northern Arizona tribal history and the challenges our tribal neighbors have faced/still face in maintaining traditional cultures while interacting with non-Native communities, and working to expanding their influence in the political sphere. Ms. Kelley Hays-Gilpin will discuss tribal history, arts, and concerns about land and sacred places, as well as the diversity within and among Northern Arizona tribes. The talk will end with discussion of some specific legislation that is relevant to Northern Arizona tribal issues and attendee questions.
Representing Legislative District 7, Arizona Senator Jamescita Peshlakai is currently serving her third Arizona Senate term as the state’s first Native American female senator. Peshlakai also served in the state House of Representatives’ Fifty-first Legislature from 2013 to 2015. Senator Peshlakai’s district is comprised of nine of Arizona’s 22 federally recognized tribal constituencies: Hualapai, Havasupai, Kaibab Paiute, San Juan Southern Paiute, Navajo, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache, and a small portion of Zuni Pueblo.
Kimberly Spurr has been a professional archaeologist for more than 30 years, working primarily in the American Southwest. She is currently the Archaeology Division Director at the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA), where she works with federal agencies and tribal representatives to preserve and protect ancestral sites and cultural material. She spent a decade as an archaeologist with the Navajo Nation assisting with compliance for infrastructure development and training Indigenous archaeology students.
With a PhD in anthropology from the University of Arizona, Kelley Hays-Gilpin serves as Professor of Anthropology at Northern Arizona University and Edward Bridge Danson, Jr. Chair of Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Her research focuses on visual arts in ancient to contemporary Pueblo communities, as well as contemporary Indigenous concerns about environment, ecology, and sacred places. She co-curated MNA’s “Native Peoples of the Colorado Plateau” gallery, and worked with representatives of 12 Native American tribes to present their stories in their own words.

Latcho Drom (1993) is a lovely, colorful documentary almost exclusively of Roma music and dance stretching from India through Western Europe.
Let’s meet Friday, June 25th at 5pm on zoom. Our guest is Sonia Skindrud, who worked with the Open Society Foundations, often in Eastern Europe, for nearly a decade in the late 1990s early 2000s. Sonya wrote her Master’s thesis (Columbia University, Teacher’s College) on Roma access to education. She will provide opening remarks on the topic to start the conversation.
Join us for what we know will be a rich conversation about nomadism and the traditionally nomadic Romani peoples.
DORR’s political film club is hosted by Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Frankie Riemer (Professor). To sign up, send an email to [email protected] and ask for the Zoom invitation. If you signed up for any of our previous films, your name is already on our list for the invite.
