MINING IN NORTHERN ARIZONA
DISCUSSION AT DORR BREAKFAST, July 18

Democrats of the Red Rocks will hold a discussion about mining in Northern Arizona at its breakfast on Thursday, July 18, 8AM at Olde Sedona Restaurant, located at 1405 W State Route 89A.

Mining in Arizona has received a growing amount of attention as controversial practices like fracking – technically hydraulic fracturing – and helium extraction have moved into the area.

Fracking is a deep well drilling process that extracts oil or natural gas via horizontal drilling that extends from the vertical bore and pumps fluid into the well at extremely high pressure powerful enough to fracture surrounding rock to create fissures and cracks through which the oil and gas are extracted.

Helium is a rare element removed from trapped gas deposits. It forms as a byproduct from the decay of heavier elements, such as uranium, and must go through an involved separation process before it can be refined and made commercially available.

DORR will discuss issues of land management, environmental concerns, and public safety related to modern mining. Guest speakers will be Joe Costion, Chair of the Coconino Community College Construction Technology Department and Bill Pierce, mining engineer and 2018 candidate for AZ State Mine Inspector.

Costion has been Dept. Chair at Coconino County Community College for over ten years and initiated its Sustainable Building Program and its Alternative Energy Program.

Pierce has been an advocate of work place safety in mines since 1985. He is an engineer with over 40 years of experience and is certified by the Mine Safety Heath Administration, OSHA certified, and has trained with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in workplace safety.

The speakers will appear as part of DORR’s critical issues breakfast series held on the third Thursday of the month. The organization presents different issues at each. All breakfasts are open to the public. There is a $15 fee to cover the cost of breakfast.

DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities that welcomes all independent-minded citizens. The DORR office at 105 Roadrunner Drive in West Sedona is open weekdays from 11AM-2PM. Information is available on how to register to vote and on candidates running for office. Walk-ins are welcome. The City of Sedona has been working with other cities and towns to persuade the State Legislature to change the short term rental statute to allow more regulation of short term rentals. One of our State Representatives, Bob Thorpe, is planning to hold a community discussion on Short Term Rentals here in Sedona. Thorpe has scheduled the community discussion for Wednesday, July 24, 3:00 at the Council Chambers in City Hall. This is Thorpe’s meeting, not a City meeting, and at this time I have no idea of what Thorpe has in mind. For those of you who are concerned one way or another with Short Term Rentals, you might try and attend that meeting and make your feelings known.

Attend the Pow Wow Etiquette On August 24th at 1:00 PM

Manuel Lucero, Executive Director of the Prescott Pow Wow, is holding a special training for people interested in understand the etiquette and best practices to be present at Powwow’s. This training is being done in anticipation of the Prescott Pow Wow, that coincides with the Neighborhood Summit for Equity September 20 – 22.

The training will take place at 1:00 pm on the afternoon of Saturday August 24th and will be at the Prescott College Fanon Center.

The entrance to the Fanon Center is best found in the parking lot behind the Launch Pad Teen Center at the corner of Grove and Sheldon.

On Friday, Sept. 20, people from 150 countries around the world will host a youth-centered global strike to bring awareness to climate change. Flagstaff is one of eight locations in Arizona officially scheduled to participate.

The nonviolent event was started by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who sparked a worldwide school climate strike after she called for a “school strike for the climate” outside the Swedish parliament building last year.

Local supporters are expected to gather on the Flagstaff City Hall lawn 10 a.m. Friday to demand that action be taken to stop global climate change. The event will also feature speakers, music and dancing.

The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board passed a resolution during its Aug. 27 meeting to recognize students’ rights to participate, as well as to increase its efforts to reduce the district’s environmental impact.

With the United States gripped in the panic of the 1950s Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deemed homosexuals to be “security risks” and vowed to rid the federal government of all employees discovered to be gay or lesbian.

Over the next four decades, the longest witch-hunt in American history, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation.

Partly based on the award-winning book by historian David K. Johnson, “The Lavender Scare” illuminates a little-known chapter of American history, and serves as a timely reminder of the value of vigilance and social action when civil liberties are under attack.

“Liberal or Conservative…Is it Genetic?” is the topic of a special luncheon hosted by the League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley on Friday, October 11, Noon-2PM, at Poco Diablo Resort, 1752 Hwy 179, Sedona, announced Kathy Kinsella, President. The featured speaker is John Alford, Ph.D., author of the book, “Predisposed: Liberals, Conservatives, and the Biology of Political Differences.” The luncheon cost is $25 and is open to the public.

According to Kinsella, “The League of Women Voters seeks to promote dialog about issues among all members of our community regardless of political party affiliation. The more we can talk to and understand each other, the more we can find common ground and move forward together.”

According to Alford, “Liberals and conservatives consistently differ in everything from occupational preferences to leisure pursuits to sensitivity to disgust, as well as personality traits, moral foundations, personal values, culinary choices, and preferences for music, art, cars, humor, poetry, fiction, and neatness. So what does this have to do with politics? Bedrock political orientations–our knee-jerk gut reactions–naturally mesh with a broader set of orientations, tastes, and preferences because they are all part of the same biologically rooted inner self.”

John R. Alford is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His early published work was mostly in the area of elections and voting behavior with an emphasis on the US Congress, but his interests have always been eclectic, and he has published in areas as diverse as coal mine safety and pronatalist policies in Eastern Europe. Professor Alford’s current research focuses on the biology of political behavior, including neuroscience and genetics. This work has been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation, and published in prominent journals including Science and the American Political Science Review, and has been featured in forums as diverse as The New York Times and Forbes, as well as Fresh Air and the Rush Limbaugh show.
