The Democrats of the Red Rocks (DORR) Breakfast at Home will host “Campaign Updates from the Candidates” on Thursday, September 17th at 10:00 am on zoom. The zoom link is available on the DORR website https://democratsoftheredrocks.org/index.html.
Guest speakers will report on national, state, and county campaigns and election issues. Tom O’Halleran, incumbent and Democratic nominee for the US House of Representatives, will address the national elections and provide updates from the nation’s capital. Matt Ryan, incumbent and candidate for Coconino County District 3 Supervisor, and Donna Michaels, candidate for Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor, will share information on local issues across both Coconino and Yavapai Counties. David Lujan, Director of the Arizona Center for Economic Policy, attorney and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives, will speak on Arizona Proposition 208, the Tax on Incomes Exceeding $250,000 for Teacher Salaries and Schools Initiative. The Proposition is on the November ballot.
DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities, that welcomes all independent-minded community members. Dr. Frances Julia Riemer is Professor of Educational Foundations and Associate Faculty/former Director of Northern Arizona University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
An educational anthropologist who has conducted ethnographic research in the US, Africa, and Latin America, she focuses on change and issues of equity and access, gender, development and sustainable communities, and cultural difference and the social organization of community, school, and workplace.
Dr. Riemer is the author of Working at the Margins: Moving off Welfare in America, co-editor of Qualitative Research: An Introduction to Methods and Designs, and editor of Front and Back Stage of Tourism Performance: Imaginaries and Bucket List Venues, as well as author of book chapters and articles in a range of journals and texts. She is a Fulbright Fellow affiliated with the University of Botswana, and recipient of a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship, an Elva Knight Research grant, an Arizona Board of Regents Innovation Fund for Learner-Centered Education grant, and a Spencer Dissertation Fellowship for Research Related to Education.
Dr. Riemer’s current research and writing projects investigate the gendering of niceness, first generation college students and study abroad, women’s handicrafts as economic development in the Global South, and community-based natural-resource management in southern Africa.Northern AZ Climate Change Alliance mission is to educate and empower people to take action now against the negative impact the climate crisis is having on our planet. Arizona Capitol Museum celebrations mark the 100th Anniversary of 19th Amendment Statehood Day
PHOENIX – February 14 is Statehood Day in Arizona and marks the beginning of the Arizona Capitol Museum’s year-long celebration of the 19th Amendment Centennial. Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs will officially unveil a new museum exhibit, Women’s Suffrage Centennial, presented by the Arizona Questers, at 2 p.m.
The Arizona Capitol Museum Guild and 48 Arizona Women are sponsoring a related presentation. At 3 p.m., Dr. Mary Melcher will present “Frances Munds: An Exceptional Arizona Leader,” which highlights this famous suffragist’s life and role in Arizona politics.
“Statehood Day reminds us that Arizona women like Frances Munds led the way to gain the vote in 1912, eight years before the 19th Amendment was included in the U.S. Constitution,” Joan Clark, Arizona Capitol Museum Guild board member said.
The event is open to the public and media.

As a supporter of our French for Arizona campaign, I wanted to share some exciting updates from January.
I was recently endorsed by Arizona List and AZNOW! Organizations in our state, working to elect women who share their commitment to advance women’s rights.
Marching in both Payson’s and Sedona’s 4th annual Women’s March reminded me that 2020 marks 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment. Despite many hard-won gains, women still don’t have guaranteed equal rights protection under our constitution. That’s one of the reasons I’m running for state Senate in Legislative District 6, to continue the fight for women’s equality.
On Valentine’s Day, I will be joining Mayor Coral Evans, the first African-American woman of color to hold that office in Flagstaff, for an Arizona List-hosted “I Love the Arizona Constitution” event. We will be celebrating the fact that Arizona gave women the right to vote in 1912, before the 19th Amendment.
Please join us Friday, February 14, at the Weatherford Hotel’s Gopher Hole Pub, for this special celebration.
While I’m proud to stand with organizations that prioritize equity, justice and fairness, my position is in stark contrast to our current state legislators. They’ve repeatedly sponsored and voted for discriminatory laws that hurt Arizonans.
Most recently, on the opening day of the Regular Session of the Legislature, the current state Senator of LD 6 introduced a bill that would increase the risk of teen pregnancy, sexual violence, and STDs, by blocking parent-approved access to age-appropriate education before the 7th grade. In the same bill, she proposed striking the term “homosexual” from all school sex education materials!
When the latest budget proposal is barely a drop in the long drought of Arizona’s education funding, and the state still hasn’t come close to restoring education funding to pre-2008 recession levels—It’s long past the time to create an accountable government that works for ALL of us.
Legislators, like my opponent, have not made a dent in our overcrowded, understaffed classrooms. On her watch as chair of the Senate Education Committee, Arizona has fallen to 46th for student funding and 49th for teacher pay. It’s no wonder AZ has the nation’s worst teacher turnover rate, and a quarter of our teaching positions are currently unfilled!
Our kids, educators, and school support staff deserve better!

AT DORR BREAKFAST at HOME, September 17, 10:00 am
The Democrats of the Red Rocks (DORR) Breakfast at Home will host “Campaign Updates from the Candidates” on Thursday, September 17th at 10:00 am on zoom. The zoom link is available on the DORR website https://democratsoftheredrocks.org/index.html.
Guest speakers will report on national, state, and county campaigns and election issues. Tom O’Halleran, incumbent and Democratic nominee for the US House of Representatives, will address the national elections and provide updates from the nation’s capital. Matt Ryan, incumbent and candidate for Coconino County District 3 Supervisor, and Donna Michaels, candidate for Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor, will share information on local issues across both Coconino and Yavapai Counties. David Lujan, Director of the Arizona Center for Economic Policy, attorney and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives, will speak on Arizona Proposition 208, the Tax on Incomes Exceeding $250,000 for Teacher Salaries and Schools Initiative. The Proposition is on the November ballot.
DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities, that welcomes all independent-minded community members. Centennial Celebration!
The League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley (LWVGVV) Women Power the Vote Luncheon will feature Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs. This event will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, February 20, at Poco Diablo Resort, 1752 Rt. 179, Sedona.
“We are pleased to have Secretary Hobbs join us to celebrate the founding of the League by Carrie Chapman Catt, 100 years ago!” said Angela LeFevre, Acting President of the League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley.
Secretary Hobbs will discuss the importance of fair elections and election security. The Secretary is the second highest ranking elected official in the State.
Noted local historian, Janeen Trevyllian will take the stage to portray Carrie Chapman Catt (Founder, League of Women Voters) and present the story of the League’s formation.
Women from the Verde Valley who are seeking political office in 2020 will also be recognized.

What is the Board of Supervisors?
The board is similar to a city or town council, with a jurisdiction including the entire county and all unincorporated areas.
County government in Arizona is an arm of the state government.
Its authority is provided by both the state constitution and the state legislature.

Supervisors are elected from the five county districts to four-year terms, and provide oversight of the County Administrator and the various county departments.
The Supervisors have the final say over county departmental budgets, set the property-tax rate and calculate all other county tax rates. The board also gives final approval for all zoning and use permits in the county’s unincorporated areas.
John Lutes is running for the District One seat, covering from Prescott to the county’s western and southern borders and including Bagdad, Yarnell, Congress and parts of Wickenburg and Peoria.
