POLARIZED: Can the Conscious Community Bridge our Divide?
A community once united by interconnectedness and love has arrived at a moment of great tension. In our conscious communities nationwide, we’re seeing friends and family fighting with and shaming one another over masks, vaccines and the election, leaving many of us feeling scared, uncertain, judged, demonized or disconnected from each other.
As an organization, ILLUMINATE’s mission is to elevate human consciousness and inspire lasting transformation through cinema, discussion and immersive experiences. We are not about taking sides; we are about expanding awareness toward inclusiveness and wholeness.
In that light, we invite you to join our expert panelists in a free event designed to explore how our minds become polarized in the pursuit of truth, and how we can find our way back to a community oriented toward tolerance, acceptance and love.
MODERATOR: Shaeri Richards is a filmmaker, writer, performer and hypnotherapist focused on the Healing Arts. Shaeri spent 20 years as a radio and television journalist and most recently served as the co-writer/producer/director of the documentary Moving from Emptiness: The Life and Art of a Zen Dude.
PANELIST: Jonas Kaplan, Ph.D is a cognitive neuroscientist. He is Assistant Research Professor of Psychology at USC’s Brain and Creativity Institute, where he uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study how the brain works. He is also Co-Director of the Dana & David Dornsife Cognitive Neuroimaging Center and co-author of “Getting a Grip on Other Minds: Mirror Neurons, Intention Understanding, and Cognitive Empathy.”
PANELIST: Ragini Michaels is the founder of Facticity® Trainings, Inc., a training and consulting company established in 1988 offering certification in Paradox Management, Centered 24-7, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Ericksonian Hypnosis. Her original work on the Psychology of Paradox has received critical acclaim and taken her across the globe to present seminars. This Month’s Film:
Two of our DORR board members co-host a happy hour Zoom discussion each month on a select political film. Just watch the film before the discussion, grab something to eat and drink, and be ready to discuss! We’ll send you some questions to think about before the discussion. Contact [email protected] for more information and ZOOM invite.
We are celebrating the Golden Globes and Black History month by viewing One Night in Miami for our next DORR political film group. Available free on Amazon Prime here.
Regina King’s directorial debut, One Night in Miami is a fictionalized account of before and after the Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston fight on February 25, 1964, when Clay’s upset victory earned him the World Heavyweight championship. After the fight, Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) and Sam Cooke ( Leslie Odom Jr) gather at the Hampton House motel. Based on a play by Kemp Powers, the film shows the private behind the public as the four icons discuss racism, freedom, and social justice.
The film received three Golden Globe nominations, one for its director, one for best actor in a supporting role for Leslie Odom Jr. who plays singer Sam Cooke, and for best original song recognition for “Speak Now.” Regina King is the second black woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination in the best director category.
Political Book Club
March 27 – Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson – 496 pages
Currently, meetings are held via Zoom from 1:00 until 3:00 pm (MST). The only requirement to join the discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material.

Greetings film fans, We’d like to keep with awards season, but shift this time to Minari (Amazon), just awarded the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and drawn from his own experiences as a child, Minari is the story of a Korean family who moves to Arkansas, via California, in search of the American dream. New York Times film reviewer A.O. Scott wrote that “Chung’s touch is careful and precise. Everything is weighed. Nothing is wasted.”
If you want a pairing, Ellen Kamerling suggests House of Sand and Fog (Amazon), based on the 1999 novel by Andre Dubus III. The film is the story of a conflict between an Iranian immigrant family and an American woman over a Californian coastal house. Also a character study, Roger Ebert wrote “Like great fiction, House of Sand and Fog sees into the hearts of its characters, and loves and pities them.”
Let’s meet Friday, March 19 at 5:00 on zoom. We look forward to a rich conversation about immigration, equity, economics, dreams, and wherever else the films lead us.
DORR’s political film club is hosted by DORR board members Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Frankie Riemer (Professor). To sign up, send an email to [email protected] and ask for the Zoom invitation. If you signed up for any of our previous films, your name is already on our list for the invite.
We’ll send a zoom invite a few days before the discussion. Just watch the film/s before we meet, grab something to eat and drink, and be ready to discuss!

Message from the President
Winter greetings!
This month we continue our integration of the Greater Verde Valley and Flagstaff League chapters. Flagstaff members and friends, consider signing up for Book Club, Let’s Talk Politics, or a Voter Education Program.
Greater Verde Valley members, are you thirsty for more political discussions? If you want to speak your mind regarding politics and hear what is happening, consider joining Thirsty Thursdays or Latte with the League with our Flagstaff members in addition to Let’s Talk Politics.
On February 4th we held the first session of our new Diversity Equity Inclusion series (DEI). Look for new programs highlighting gender, African-American, Latinx, and Native American issues in the coming months.
Last, we have just launched our new website at LWVNAZ.org and will be building it out over the coming months. This website has all our event and zoom sign up information in one place, along with membership and donation information. Take a look!
Stay healthy and safe!

Request to Speak, RTS, is an easy program created by the State of Arizona to let our voices be heard. Join us by contacting the AZ Legislature to let them know which bills we support and oppose. Our voices will be heard regarding education, the climate/environment, democracy reform/voting, economic justice, healthcare, and immigration. Though this AZ state access is called Request to Speak we will be armchair activists and speak through our online actions. Please join us by signing up for RTS.
