She currently serves as the Flagstaff Team Chair for Speak Out Arizona, the Vice President of Coconino County’s Democratic Party, the President of the Flagstaff branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Vice President of Programming for the statewide Arizona AAUW.
Anne Schneider
Retired professor and former Dean at ASU. Her specialty is public policy. She is the author of several books and has taught and conducted research on state politics, governance, and public policy. She is a member of the Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Chandler, AZ and is the Policy Coordinator of Unitarian Universalist Justice Arizona. Weigh in on bills from the comfort of your couch! Arizona’s Request to Speak (RTS) is an online tool that lets everyday citizens give Arizona state lawmakers our feedback on bills. It’s an easy way to get involved in state politics, stay informed on the bills that directly affect us, and make sure our elected officials honor the wishes of us, their constituents.
Cathy Rutherford will be doing a Request to Speak (“RTS”) training at the DORR Office (information below).
In order to actually use the RST system the day of the training, you will need to sign up online on the Civic Engagement Beyond Voting website at: http://www.cebv.us/. If you have already signed up, you will need to know your password.
On the same website you can also sign up for the weekly newsletter which gives information about upcoming legislation along with recommendations about the response to be input on RTS.

The Democrats of the Red Rocks will hold its annual meeting and board elections on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 4 pm to 6:30 pm at St. Andrews Episcopal Church Meeting Hall, 100 Arroyo Pinion, Sedona, AZ. The evening’s keynote speaker will be Arizona’s new Secretary of State Katie Hobbs.
The Secretary of State serves as the chief election officer in the state of Arizona, which includes oversight of campaign finance for statewide and legislative candidates, verifying initiatives and referenda for the ballot, and certifying the official results of each election. The office-holder is also first in line to ascend to governor, since Arizona does not have a lieutenant governor. Four of the nine preceding governors in Arizona have moved to that office while serving as secretary of state due to a vacancy.
Secretary of State Hobbs (D) was declared the winner of the November 2018 election by a 50.4% to 49.6 % victory in that race. The office has previously been held by a Republican since 1995.
Additional speakers on the program will include Deedra Abboud, former U.S. Senate Candidate;
Felicia French, former candidate for the AZ Legislature, District 6; and Felicia Rotellini, Chair of the AZ Democratic Party.
The meeting is a potluck event, open to all, however the business portion of voting for the organization’s board will be limited to actual organization members. There is no fee to attend the event, but members must be current on their dues (renewals will be accepted at the meeting) to vote.
DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities, that welcomes all independent-minded community members. DEMOCRATS TO DISCUSS “DIRTY MONEY”

The Democrats of the Red Rocks will host a discussion with guest speaker Diane McQueen from the “Outlaw Dirty Money” citizen initiative at its breakfast meeting on Thursday, March 21st at Olde Sedona Family Restaurant, 1405 W SR 89A. The meeting starts at 8AM.
Outlaw Dirty Money is a statewide volunteer group working to place a constitutional amendment on the 2020 ballot to require certain “Right to Know” regulations on campaign contributions and expenditures. The aim is to increase transparency in elections. The initiative proposes that any non-profit spending more than $20,000 on a statewide campaign or $10,000 on a local race would have to disclose all donors who contributed $5000 or more.
A 2018 attempt at a similar ballot initiative fell short of the 225,963 valid signatures that were needed, in large part because of a series of laws passed in recent years that have made it more difficult for citizen initiatives to succeed in actually reaching the ballot.
It will be even more difficult to qualify for the 2020 ballot. Due to last year’s high voter turnout, the new number of required signatures the group will need is up another 125,000 for a total of 357,467. Additionally, a new law requires judges to toss signatures if a petitioner doesn’t show up in court to defend a challenged petition, even if there are undisputed valid signatures on the sheet.
Ms. McQueen will appear as part of DORR’s critical issues breakfast series, held on the third Thursday of the month. The organization presents a different program each month. All breakfasts are open to the public. There is a $15 fee to cover the cost of breakfast.

The City of Sedona invites residents to an Open House to provide input on potential transit service options in and around Sedona. The Open House will be held on Tuesday, April 9th, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Sedona Library (325 White Bear Rd.) Community Room.
The service options include preliminary analyses of who might use the transit system, what incentives/disincentives would be required to promote ridership, key origins and destinations, frequency of service, and estimated costs. The Sedona OLLI will be hosting an extraordinary visitor this Wednesday whose work is aligned with League of Women Voter goals.
The guest will be Keith Allred, the new executive director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse, established in Tucson after the tragic shooting that killed six people and wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. He is known for creating CommonSenseAmerican.org a very successful initiative that brought Republicans, Democrats, and Independents in Idaho together to find and champion solutions with broad support–and is now being rolled out across the country.
Keith earned a BA in American History from Stanford and a PhD in Organizational Behavior from UCLA. He served as the first professor of negotiation and conflict resolution hired by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, after being on the Columbia University faculty.
He is among the most articulate, effective, and dynamic leaders in the movement towards transpartisan dialogue, deliberation, and political action in America.
Remarkably, he is coming to the Sedona OLLI next Wednesday (April 24) at 1:00 to give a Lunch & Learn talk in room 34 on his work
He also will offer from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. that day a two-hour workshop on promoting civil discourse in everyday life and in local, state and national organizations. Both are free and open to all.

She brings to her role over 30 years of leadership experience across a number of leading colleges in Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia. Meet her to learn about her background in community college work and her intentions for the future of YC services in Sedona and the Verde Valley. Jack Harris began his career with the Phoenix Police Department in 1972. He served honorably for over 39 years rising through the ranks from patrol officer to Police Chief. As the Police Chief he led a department that consisted of over 3500 sworn police officers and a support staff of 1100 civilian positions with an annual budget of over half a billion dollars. After retiring he was asked to return to become a Deputy City Manager with the title of Public Safety Manager. In this position he continued to serve as Police Chief but took on the added responsibility of leadership of the City of Phoenix Emergency Management team as well as having direct oversight of all public safety entities in the City of Phoenix. He retired in 2011 and is currently consulting on a variety of police related issues.
Jack is a graduate of Phoenix College, Arizona State University, Ottawa University, the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy and the FBI National Executive institute. He has received numerous awards including lifetime achievement awards from the Governor of Arizona and the Fraternal Order of Police and was recently selected to receive the Leadership award for 2012 from the Police Executive Research Forum in Washington, DC. In 2015 he was selected to receive the prestigious “Service Above Self” award from the United States Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Mark Kelly
Astronaut Mark Kelly has announced that he’s running in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate from Arizona. Kelly, the husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, logged more than 54 days in space across four missions and piloted the final flight of space shuttle Endeavour. Kelly and Giffords became nationally known following an assassination attempt that almost killed her in January 2011. She and 18 others were shot with six being left dead. In a video announcing his run, Kelly said the shooting made him realize that, when bad things happen, “you’ve got to move ahead and try to make a difference in the world.” He went on to say: “I care about people, I care about the state of Arizona, I care about this nation, and because of that, I’ve decided that I’m launching a campaign for the United States Senate.”
