The Janes offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group, many speaking on the record for the first time, of how they defied the state legislature that outlawed abortion, the Catholic Church that condemned it, and the Chicago Mob that was profiting from it. In the pre-Roe v. Wade era—a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois—

Hello Friends and Colleagues in the Verde Valley,
From May 11-14 Red Earth Theatre will be hosting two of my performances at the Old Town Center for the Arts in Cottonwood. “Democracy” a short outdoor rant about true democracy and “Fayettenam”, an indoor theater piece remixing the ancestral ghosts of Fayettnam’s Appalachian Mountains and the myths of manifest destiny.
These are pieces I am proud of and looking forward to share with the Verde Valley community. There are only 40 tickets per show and I suggest getting your tickets sooner rather than later, plus they cost $5 more at the door.
There will be Apple Pie!
Hope to see you there and please share info about the event.

The importance of language in political messaging cannot be overstated. In politics, every word counts. A successful campaign can hinge on the artful construction of messages that resonate with voters. Political language is more than slogans; it can bridge the gap between political ideals and public perception. Note the regrettably misunderstood term “Defund the police.”
It behooves all of us to be conscious of the language we’re using and how it will be construed, when talking to others or writing Letters to the Editor. This program will help us fine tune our political messaging to make it most effective.
Our 3 speakers are with a non-profit called Words That W!N dedicated to teaching and promoting strategic messaging to win hearts, minds, and votes. WTW is an all-volunteer group, passionate about good messaging.
If you haven’t already, please check out DORR’s latest issue of Keeping Posted, exclusively devoted to messaging.

The Treasury Department projects that the US government will only be able to pay it’s bills through June 1 without a debt limit increase. That means we’re only eight days away from a default – and the worldwide economic catastrophe it would create! The Republicans are literally holding the debt payment legislation hostage, so they can get budget cuts they want!
There’s still a way to stop the crisis: House Democrats have introduced a Discharge Petition, which is an escape hatch to bring a clean default prevention bill to the House floor, even if Kevin McCarthy tries to block it. For this to work, 218 Members of Congress must sign on and refuse to negotiate on cuts that will hurt our communities.
Please call CD2 Congressman Eli Crane at 202-225-3361 or email him at: https://crane.house.gov/contact and demand that he vote to end the hostage-taking and the cruel cuts to public schools, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits and other life-saving programs that our communities rely on, and instead do the bare minimum of paying for the obligations our government has already incurred.
If the Republicans want to cut necessary programs, they should do it in separate legislation that doesn’t threaten a global financial crisis!

POLITICAL BOOK CLUB
PBC – The book for March 27th is Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum (June 2021, 224 pages) The Pulitzer Prize winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism. Applebaum contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.
The only requirement to join the book club discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material. If you would like to join the book club, or want to submit the title of books you are interested in reading and discussing, or if you would like any other information about the book club, please contact [email protected]
LET”S TALK POLITICS
At 4:15 pm, those who have not read the book can join the group to share thoughts, concerns, insights, and predilections about current political and societal events. As one member stated, we can talk about “those issues which keep you awake at night”. Everyone has a chance to speak, while we all listen. Topics for discussion usually evolve from the group concerns. Whatever your political persuasion, you are welcome to join this accepting and respectful group.

City of Sedona opens applications for a Tourism Advisory Board
In an effort to solicit a range of community perspectives around the topic of tourism in Sedona, the City of Sedona seeks applicants for a new Tourism Advisory Board (TAB). This voluntary body, vetted and chosen by City Council, will consist of 11-people appointed to advise the Council and staff on decisions related to tourism strategic planning, branding and marketing, visitor management programs, regional tourism efforts and any other tourism related matters assigned to it by the city council.
Through the development of an in-house city tourism program and the work of the TAB, city council intends to support tourism to ensure a healthy economy but also balance business needs with resident quality of life. During 2021 and 2022, with the rapid increase in visitation to Sedona and the associated impacts, the city council paused funding for destination marketing and refocused its efforts towards tourism management and mitigation. As the Sedona economy has softened somewhat over the last year, additional strategies for both targeted destination branding and marketing, and responsible destination management and environmental stewardship must be explored.
“This group has a unique opportunity to play an instrumental role in creating a destination marketing and management program that considers and addresses today’s tourism challenges. Approaches that may have worked historically should not be assumed to be the right ones for the future. We look forward to convening this group by early fall and getting started on this important work,” said City Manager Karen Osburn.
Background
In Spring 2023, the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau informed the city they did not plan to renew the current contract for tourism management and marketing services. Soon after, city council designated the city of Sedona government as the official destination marketing organization (DMO) with the Arizona Office of Tourism and directed staff to develop a new municipal tourism management program. As this program is built out, a beginning step is to create a TAB as one method to ensure that the voices and perspectives of all community stakeholders and stakeholder groups are equally and fairly represented in future conversations regarding tourism and tourism related goals and actions.
Board details and application process
The TAB should represent a broad diversity in representation, perspectives and opinions. Applicants should be at least one of the following: a Sedona resident, own or operate a business within the city limits or represent an organization serving the community.
At least initially, this group is expected to meet monthly starting in the fall. Over time as the initial work lessens, meetings could transition to being held quarterly. It is also anticipated that subcommittees may be formed to tackle specific issues and/or special meetings may periodically be needed. Meetings will be subject to Open Meeting Law requirements with agendas posted ahead of time, and meetings broadcast live and recorded for full transparency. TAB terms will be a mix of two or four years in length.
Applications may be picked up at the City Clerk’s office, at 102 Roadrunner Dr. or by accessing this fillable PDF version. Return completed applications to the City Clerk’s Office or via email at [email protected] no later than 5 p.m. on July 10, 2023.
Once the application deadline closes, city council will review applications and schedule in-person interviews.

TAB terms will be a mix of two or four years in length.
