On Friday, Sept. 20, people from 150 countries around the world will host a youth-centered global strike to bring awareness to climate change. Flagstaff is one of eight locations in Arizona officially scheduled to participate.
The nonviolent event was started by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who sparked a worldwide school climate strike after she called for a “school strike for the climate” outside the Swedish parliament building last year.
Local supporters are expected to gather on the Flagstaff City Hall lawn 10 a.m. Friday to demand that action be taken to stop global climate change. The event will also feature speakers, music and dancing.
The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board passed a resolution during its Aug. 27 meeting to recognize students’ rights to participate, as well as to increase its efforts to reduce the district’s environmental impact.

The State Committee is the governing body of the Arizona Democratic Party. Membership in the State Committee consists of persons elected within the Party structure, as provided by Arizona State Statute. The Arizona Democratic Party takes pride in making certain all regions and all communities are represented in the State Committee. State Committee Members are voted into office by their precinct committeemen of their legislative district, every two years.

Come early for a pre-film reception hosted by Unify Sedona, and stay after the film for a Q&A and community conversation.
“The Lavender Scare” is narrated by Glenn Close and features the voices of an all-star ensemble cast, including David Hyde Pierce, Cynthia Nixon, Zachary Quinto and T.R. Knight.
With the United States gripped in the panic of the 1950s Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deemed homosexuals to be “security risks” and vowed to rid the federal government of all employees discovered to be gay or lesbian.

Over the next four decades, the longest witch-hunt in American history, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation.
But the mass firings have an unintended effect: they stirred outrage in the gay community, helped ignite the gay rights movement, and thrust an unlikely hero into the forefront of the LGBTQ rights movement.
Partly based on the award-winning book by historian David K. Johnson, “The Lavender Scare” illuminates a little-known chapter of American history, and serves as a timely reminder of the value of vigilance and social action when civil liberties are under attack.

The only requirement is that you read the book! Discussions take place the last Saturday of each month, 1-3PM, at a member’s home. “Liberal or Conservative…Is it Genetic?” is the topic of a special luncheon hosted by the League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley on Friday, October 11, Noon-2PM, at Poco Diablo Resort, 1752 Hwy 179, Sedona, announced Kathy Kinsella, President. The featured speaker is John Alford, Ph.D., author of the book, “Predisposed: Liberals, Conservatives, and the Biology of Political Differences.” The luncheon cost is $25 and is open to the public.
According to Kinsella, “The League of Women Voters seeks to promote dialog about issues among all members of our community regardless of political party affiliation. The more we can talk to and understand each other, the more we can find common ground and move forward together.”
According to Alford, “Liberals and conservatives consistently differ in everything from occupational preferences to leisure pursuits to sensitivity to disgust, as well as personality traits, moral foundations, personal values, culinary choices, and preferences for music, art, cars, humor, poetry, fiction, and neatness. So what does this have to do with politics? Bedrock political orientations–our knee-jerk gut reactions–naturally mesh with a broader set of orientations, tastes, and preferences because they are all part of the same biologically rooted inner self.”
John R. Alford is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His early published work was mostly in the area of elections and voting behavior with an emphasis on the US Congress, but his interests have always been eclectic, and he has published in areas as diverse as coal mine safety and pronatalist policies in Eastern Europe. Professor Alford’s current research focuses on the biology of political behavior, including neuroscience and genetics. This work has been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation, and published in prominent journals including Science and the American Political Science Review, and has been featured in forums as diverse as The New York Times and Forbes, as well as Fresh Air and the Rush Limbaugh show.

Matt Ryan, incumbent and candidate for Coconino County District 3 Supervisor, and Donna Michaels, candidate for Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor, will share information on local issues across both Coconino and Yavapai Counties. David Lujan, Director of the Arizona Center for Economic Policy, attorney and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives, will speak on Arizona Proposition 208, the Tax on Incomes Exceeding $250,000 for Teacher Salaries and Schools Initiative. The Proposition is on the November ballot.

Voter Registration Training
All volunteers are asked to participate in one of the following training sessions.

DEMOCRATS TO DISCUSS “Campaign Updates from the Candidates”
AT DORR BREAKFAST at HOME, September 17, 10:00 am
The Democrats of the Red Rocks (DORR) Breakfast at Home will host “Campaign Updates from the Candidates” on Thursday, September 17th at 10:00 am on zoom. The zoom link is available on the DORR website https://democratsoftheredrocks.org/index.html.
Guest speakers will report on national, state, and county campaigns and election issues. Tom O’Halleran, incumbent and Democratic nominee for the US House of Representatives, will address the national elections and provide updates from the nation’s capital. Matt Ryan, incumbent and candidate for Coconino County District 3 Supervisor, and Donna Michaels, candidate for Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor, will share information on local issues across both Coconino and Yavapai Counties. David Lujan, Director of the Arizona Center for Economic Policy, attorney and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives, will speak on Arizona Proposition 208, the Tax on Incomes Exceeding $250,000 for Teacher Salaries and Schools Initiative. The Proposition is on the November ballot.
DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities, that welcomes all independent-minded community members. Climate Change: What’s Gender Got to Do with It?
How Women will Lead Us to a More Sustainable Future

Dr. Frances Julia Riemer is Professor of Educational Foundations and Associate Faculty/former Director of Northern Arizona University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
An educational anthropologist who has conducted ethnographic research in the US, Africa, and Latin America, she focuses on change and issues of equity and access, gender, development and sustainable communities, and cultural difference and the social organization of community, school, and workplace.
Dr. Riemer is the author of Working at the Margins: Moving off Welfare in America, co-editor of Qualitative Research: An Introduction to Methods and Designs, and editor of Front and Back Stage of Tourism Performance: Imaginaries and Bucket List Venues, as well as author of book chapters and articles in a range of journals and texts. She is a Fulbright Fellow affiliated with the University of Botswana, and recipient of a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship, an Elva Knight Research grant, an Arizona Board of Regents Innovation Fund for Learner-Centered Education grant, and a Spencer Dissertation Fellowship for Research Related to Education.
Dr. Riemer’s current research and writing projects investigate the gendering of niceness, first generation college students and study abroad, women’s handicrafts as economic development in the Global South, and community-based natural-resource management in southern Africa.Northern AZ Climate Change Alliance mission is to educate and empower people to take action now against the negative impact the climate crisis is having on our planet.
