Capital in the Twenty-First Century
Available on Netflix
https://www.netflix.com/title/81239470
After several films about nomadic life (i.e. Nomadland, Acasa My Home/ Latcho Drom), we thought we might take a look at what folks are rejecting. And what better than the documentary about capitalism based on Thomas Piketty’s best selling book?
Piketty, “a French academic, is not only a brilliant economist but also one with a gift for making complicated ideas accessible,” wrote Ben Kenigsberg, in The New York Times. In the documentary, Piketty and guests give a historical context on unchecked capitalism, and discuss wealth, poverty, and power in capitalist societies. To quote Simran Hans of the Guardian, they show how tenets of capitalism were “packaged and sold to the middle classes as a social leveller destined to improve the quality of life for all,” a belief that is becoming suspect in these times of vast wealth inequality.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/sep/27/capital-in-the-twenty-first-century-review-justin-pemberton-thomas-piketty
Let’s meet August 20, 2021 at 5:00pm (AZ) on zoom. Just watch the film before we meet, grab something to eat and drink, and be ready to discuss! We look forward to a dynamic conversation on the acquisition of capital, the growing wealth gap, and-to harken back to our last films–the acceptance (or rejection) of settled ways of life and commercial, consumerist values. We’ll send the Zoom invitation a few days before our discussion.
DORR’s political film club is hosted by Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Frankie Riemer (Professor). To sign up, send an email to [email protected] and ask for the Zoom invitation. If you signed up for any of our previous films, your name is already on our list for the invite.

Our agenda includes (time permitting) but is not limited to the following items:
1. Social time and dinner. Meet fellow Democrats and enjoy food and drink from the menu. Talk about what is on your mind and share ideas.
2. Introduction.
3. Discussion on current political developments: Arizona Primary results, GOTV, the impact of outlawing abortion, and the Jan 6 hearings. We might have a surprise guest speaker – it depends on the primary outcome.
4. Call to the Public. People will have 2 minutes to speak about whatever is on their mind. Cards will be collected before the meeting with their name, organization, and a brief summary of statement. All people who vote Democratic (no matter party affiliation) are welcome to attend.
The DORR Political Film Club meets monthly to discuss a movie. Participants can view the movie on social media sites, such as Netflix, Prime, You Tube, Apple, etc. The group meets monthly to discuss the movie.
The group is continuing their (anti-)war theme, this time moving west to Spain, the Spanish Civil War, and the “The Silence of Others” (2018, Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/watch/81086605?trackId=14277281&tctx=-97%2C-97%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C81086605
Executively produced by Pedro Almodovar, “The Silence of Others” follows a lawsuit filed to address the oppression, torture, and murder of an estimated 100,000 people during Franco’s 40-year dictatorship in Spain. In the background is the 1977 Spanish amnesty law, known as “the pact of forgetting,” which prohibits legal action for crimes committed during the country’s Civil War, and has been a “formidable obstacle to justice.” “For much of the population – including the survivor who passes his torturer’s home every day on the way to market, the children of forcibly disappeared parents found buried in mass graves, and parents still searching for their children seized at birth and handed to Franco’s allies – there is no peace in silence” (official film synopsis).
The documentary won awards for Best Documentary and Peace Film Prize Winner at the Berlin International Film Festival 2018.
A classic on the same topic, “The Spanish Earth,” (1938 YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTKtS4WtK_c), is a possible pairing for folks who have time to view two films. Narrated by Ernest Hemmingway, “The Spanish Earth” documents the Republican fight against Franco as it unfolded in the 1930s.
We look forward to a lively conversation about the Spanish Civil War, resistance, justice, and reparations.
DORR’s political film club is hosted by DORR member Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Board member Frankie Riemer (Professor). We’ll send ZOOM invites a few days before our June 3 conversation.
Cathy Ranson and Neal Sinclair, candidates for Arizona State House, will appear at this bi-partisan event. Please come and show your support.

They really did it.
We knew it was coming, but now it is official. The Conservatives on the Supreme Court of the United States have overturned a basic health care right that has been in place for nearly 50 years. This will be the first time in our country’s history that a generation of women will come of age with FEWER rights than the preceding generation.
Half of the states in our country are poised to move quickly to ban abortion. The SCOTUS decision has already “triggered” laws in South Dakota, Louisiana and Kentucky that immediately outlaw abortion. Missouri’s State Attorney General moved to enact that state’s trigger law within minutes of the Supreme Court ruling. Thirteen states are moving to outlaw abortion within the next 30 days. Seven more are poised to act within the next few months. Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin are among the 10 states that have pre-Roe abortion bans that are now expected to take effect.
In Arizona, it is unclear whether all abortions will be banned based on a law that is still on the books from the 1800’s or only those after 15 weeks, will be outlawed, as per the recent legislation signed by Gov. Ducey.
Women will be forced to travel across taste lines, in some cases hundreds of miles to access the health care they need. Those without the means to do so will be forced by the state to carry their pregnancies to term. This chaos will create a public health emergency as women’s lives, health, and futures are dictated by the states in which they live.
