DORR – Discussion – “Race, Activism, a&Crimminal Justice Reform in NO. AZ” @ Zoom
Aug 6 @ 6:30 pm

DEMOCRATS OF THE RED ROCKS HOST DISCUSSION:
“RACE, ACTIVISM AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
IN NORTHERN ARIZONA”
LIVE, ON-LINE AUGUST 6, 6:30 PM

The Democrats of the Red Rocks will host an early evening discussion on race, activism, and criminal justice reform in Northern Arizona. Guest speakers are Lee Phillips, noted criminal defense attorney, Dave Rhodes, presumptive Sheriff of Yavapai County, and Madison Lisle, community activist in Prescott AZ. The conversation is scheduled for Thursday, August 6th at 6:30 pm live on zoom. The zoom link is available on the DORR website https://democratsoftheredrocks.org/index.html.
Demonstrations continue across the country against police brutality, police racism, and lack of police accountability. Protests have been growing in many cities, in response to the recent introduction of federal agents to urban areas. Balancing policing and community welfare has been problematic, and with the latest round of protests, relationships in many US cities have become further frayed. This is the background for DORR’s on-line conversation about race, activism, and criminal justice reform. Speakers will focus on the range of ways communities address and confront these challenges in Northern Arizona.
Lee Phillips, criminal defense attorney, has successfully challenged racially discriminatory I-40 stops by the Arizona Dept of Public Safety, and has led challenges to the Coconino County Jail practice of detaining undocumented persons for subsequent ICE arrest. Phillips will highlight the experiences of his client Neko Wilson, a Black man detained in the Navajo County Jail, without bail, for an alleged probation violation.

Dave Rhodes, presumptive incoming Yavapai County Sheriff, will discuss his championship of jail diversion initiatives, including both pre-arrest and post-arrest strategies, and the decriminalization of mental illness. Rhodes serves on several local and state law enforcement committees and is recognized as an innovator in decriminalizing mental illness.

The panel concludes with a call to action from Madison Lisle, an organizer in Prescott, Arizona, where she is pursuing a Masters in Social Justice and Community Organizing. Lisle currently organizes for immigration justice with the local group Keep Prescott Together. She will address justice, multiracial organizing, and working-class politics.

Spotlight on Donna Michaels:
Candidate for Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor.  Listen to Donna’s thoughts on traffic and transportation issues in Yavapai County.

DORR is an all-volunteer Democratic Club for Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, the Verde Valley, and surrounding communities, that welcomes all independent-minded community members. Corporation Commission Candidates

Shea Stanfield

My responsibility, as an ACC Clean Elections candidate in 2020, is to represent the residents of Arizona, protecting you as ratepayers.

My role is to focus on the ACC’s Constitutional oversight responsibilities; this includes engaging in decisions for renewable energy solutions, attracting sustainable business, and supporting the development of a healthy and economically thriving environment, by fighting corruption.

Together, we must elect individuals who are committed to building a sustainable future for Arizona. Read More

Bill Mundell

Bill believes the Corporation Commission should serve the people, not corporate interests. He has been fighting for transparency at the commission, which cost him dearly when APS and other utilities spent millions to defeat him.

If elected to the commission in 2020, Bill will fight for ratepayers and put an end to the price-fixing and backroom deals that cost ratepayers millions.

Bill believes investing in solar and renewable energy is the right approach for the economy as well as the environment.

He will fight to bring back rooftop solar incentives that APS-backed commissioners repealed, and fight to make sure our state is carbon neutral by 2050. Read More

Anna Tovar
Whether serving as Mayor in her hometown of Tolleson, fighting for a better quality of life for underserved communities as a State Senator, or teaching our youth in the Tolleson Elementary School District, Anna Tovar has dedicated her life to improving Arizona communities.

She now wants to bring her integrity and experience to the Arizona Corporation Commission where she can fight for accountability and fairness for all Arizona consumers. Read More
