Greetings film fans and happy 2023! DORR’s political film group is back after the winter holidays. Awards season is upon us once again, and we’re proposing Argentina 1985, the Golden Globe winner for Best Picture-non English film, as our next selection.

Inspired by the true story of the legal fight to prosecute Argentina’s military dictatorship in the 1980s, the film centers on the Trial of the Juntas, in which a civilian court tried former military leaders for brutal crimes committed while the country was under a right-wing dictatorship. The trial is the only example to date of a large-scale effort by a Latin American democratic government against its country’s former dictatorial government. Natalia Winkelman wrote in The New York Times, “Like a pair of old wingtips polished with wax, Argentina, 1985 spins a notable piece of history into an impassioned courtroom drama flecked with quaint humor.” Argentina 1985 is available on Amazon Prime. Join us to talk about what The Guardian called a “forthright, muscular and potent movie.”

We’ll send an invite to our zoom conversation a few days before February 10.

Let’s meet Friday February 10th from 5-6pm on Zoom. We look forward to a rich conversation about immigration, equity, economics, dreams, and wherever else the films lead us.

DORR’s political film club is hosted by Mik Jordahl (Attorney) and Frankie Riemer (Professor). To sign up, send an email to [email protected] and ask for the Zoom invitation. If you signed up for any of our previous films, your name is already on our list for the invite.
