League of Women Voters of Northern AZ Presents
Who is the Independent Voter?
2:00 – 4:00PM
Thom Reilly and Jacqueline Salit,
co- directors of the Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy at Arizona State University.
Independents (registered as “Party Not Designated,” the official term used in Arizona) are now the largest bloc of potential voters in our state—a plurality of Arizona voters.
Who are these growing numbers of independents, what do they want, and how are they transforming the political landscape in Arizona and the United States? How is the volatile crisis in US democracy connected to this steep rise of independent voters?

POLITICAL BOOK CLUB
PBC – The book for March 27th is Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum (June 2021, 224 pages) The Pulitzer Prize winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism. Applebaum contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.
The only requirement to join the book club discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material. If you would like to join the book club, or want to submit the title of books you are interested in reading and discussing, or if you would like any other information about the book club, please contact [email protected]
LET”S TALK POLITICS
At 4:15 pm, those who have not read the book can join the group to share thoughts, concerns, insights, and predilections about current political and societal events. As one member stated, we can talk about “those issues which keep you awake at night”. Everyone has a chance to speak, while we all listen. Topics for discussion usually evolve from the group concerns. Whatever your political persuasion, you are welcome to join this accepting and respectful group.
To join the Zoom meeting, click here and use passcode 220148. You will need to be admitted by the host.

Letter from the Chair
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Presidential Election Day 2024 is in 39 weeks. What will you do to make sure that it’s a day to celebrate? There’s a lot to do between now and then!
Be sure to attend our Democracy Fair on February 24th, from noon to 4:00 pm.
Invite everyone you know and help us fill the cafeteria and commons areas of Coconino High School with voters and future voters. We’ll need lots of help that day, please sign up to help if you can.
A big thank you to Nancy Branham and all the volunteers who make the Coconino
County Democratic Party Donation Drive in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. such a huge success. The last of the winter clothing and blanket donations are packed up and ready for delivery to Sovereign Lands. Thank you to District 4 Supervisor Judy Begay for making those arrangements.
Are you interested in working for Coconino County to help with Election Day?
Find out more at our Action Meeting or call the Elections Office at 928-679-7120 and ask for Denise Anderson.
Finally, go ahead and download the DNC REACH app on your personal device, and
look on Mobilize for the training on how to use it. This APP for relational canvassing will be a key component of the coordinated campaign, and you’ll be hearing lots more about it.
Get ahead of the game and be ready for the campaign to reelect Biden/Harris!
Together we will celebrate a Blue Arizona 2024,
Laura Carter

The League of Women Voters Central Yavapai County
has scheduled our good friend
Terry Goddard
as the guest speaker at their
March 2nd meeting. It’s my understanding that he will be speaking about the status of the lawsuits going on.
This meeting is open to the public and available on Zoom but you do need to register whether you are attending in-person or via zoom as there are in-person and zoom max capacities.
The session is on Saturday, March 2nd from 11-12:30 at Yavapai College, building 3, room 119. I’ve attached a map of the college if you are attending in-person. It’s the same room where the league holds all their sessions.
To register:
1. Click on this registration link to register..
2. Click on Add to Cart to either attend in-person or attend via Zoom (there are two choices).
3. On the Cart Preview screens that displays, scroll to the bottom and click on Checkout.
4. On the next screen, click on the Check Out button.
5. You will have to create a new account for Olli if you don’t already have one.
6. After creating your account (or logging in if you already have an OLLI account) you can click on the Cart icon to bring up the cart with your registration.
7. Again, click on the Check Out button. When I did this it made me go back and click on Purchase first. Then I got a screen with my order confirmation. Cheesh!
8. I then got an email confirming my reservation.
