This Month’s Film:

Two of our DORR board members co-host a happy hour Zoom discussion each month on a select political film.  Just watch the film before the discussion, grab something to eat and drink, and be ready to discuss!  We’ll send you some questions to think about before the discussion. Contact [email protected]  for more information and ZOOM invite.

We are celebrating the Golden Globes and Black History month by viewing One Night in Miami for our next DORR political film group.  Available free on Amazon Prime here.

Regina King’s directorial debut, One Night in Miami is a fictionalized account of before and after the Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston fight on February 25, 1964, when Clay’s upset victory earned him the World Heavyweight championship.  After the fight, Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) and Sam Cooke ( Leslie Odom Jr) gather at the Hampton House motel.  Based on a play by Kemp Powers, the film shows the private behind the public as the four icons discuss racism, freedom, and social justice.

The film received three Golden Globe nominations, one for its director, one for best actor in a supporting role for Leslie Odom Jr. who plays singer Sam Cooke, and for best original song recognition for “Speak Now.”  Regina King is the second black woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination in the best director category.
